MANAMA: A lawyer has resorted to the civil court to claim fees from a woman for whom he appeared in court in several lawsuits, after she refused to pay his dues, estimated by the court at BD1,000.
The court rejected the lawyer’s request to calculate interest on late payment of the claimed amount.
The court indicated that the civil law prohibits the payment of interest for delaying fulfilment of the obligation concerning civil debts, if the amount adjudged as attorney’s fees for the plaintiff is a civil debt. The court rejected this request.
The lawyer said that he had entered into a fee agreement with the defendant entitling him to receive fees for representing his client and pleading her case in courts. Despite fulfilment of his obligation, submitting legal memoranda, attending court hearings and following up on all legal work assigned to him, the defendant failed to pay the agreed amount, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
