AN electrician who tried to murder his estranged wife has been sentenced in absentia to five years behind bars by the High Criminal Court.
The 38-year-old Egyptian man fled to his home country immediately after committing the crime.
In March 2020, the defendant allegedly pushed the 25-year-old victim through a window of his apartment in Gudaibiya.
She fell on the roof of a car, but medical reports showed that the fall left her with a five per cent disability, including damage to the spine.
“Although he intended to murder her, the attempt failed due to circumstances beyond his control,” said court documents.
The defendant reportedly had a history of domestic violence and would often assault his wife.
“After we got married, he started to repeatedly beat me and physically abuse me,” said the Moroccan victim in her statement to prosecutors.
“I asked for a divorce which angered him.
“Because he refused a divorce, I left our Gudaibiya apartment and moved into another place with our son.
“One day, the defendant came to my new residence and beat me. He then dragged me to his place and continued abusing me.
“I tried running away but could not, so I stood near a window and threatened to throw myself out of it if he did not stop.”
The defendant then pushed the victim himself, said court documents.
“The defendant did not call an ambulance or try to rescue his wife, which proves that he intended to murder her,” the verdict read.
A witness told the Public Prosecution that he saw the defendant speeding away in his car immediately after the incident.
“I was making a cup of tea for breakfast, when I suddenly heard a loud sound,” said the 60-year-old Bahraini who lives in the apartment building the incident took place in.
“I looked out of my window to see a woman lying on top of a car. I rushed downstairs and suddenly the woman was nowhere to be found.”
The finance employee said he saw a man rushing away in a vehicle at the same time.
Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs revealed that the defendant booked a flight immediately after he committed the crime and flew back to Egypt.
