YET another drug mule is standing trial at the High Criminal Court for allegedly attempting to smuggle methamphetamine and heroin into the country.
The 34-year-old Pakistani man is said to have smuggled 83 capsules inside his stomach in late July. He also faces charges of hashish possession and use.
During police investigations, he had admitted to knowingly smuggling the drugs to hand over to unknown associates in Bahrain in return for cash.
However, he denied the accusations at his first court hearing yesterday.
Suspicion
According to court documents, the defendant was apprehended after a Bahrain International Airport Customs officer flagged him on suspicion of illicit activity.
An X-ray scan revealed a number of round objects in his stomach, and he was taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex where he went on to expel the drug-filled capsules.
The defendant ended up excreting a total of 83 pills over six intervals, two police officers who supervised the drug-excretion process told Public Prosecution.
The contraband then underwent analysis by Interior Ministry forensics experts, and was revealed to contain methamphetamine and heroin.
Another test showed that the defendant had traces of hashish in his urine.
The trial was adjourned to September 25.
