POLL candidates can file their nominations from Wednesday until Sunday, according to a top election official.
A special mechanism has also been adopted to enable Covid-19 patients to exercise their constitutional right to run for the elections, while adhering to health and precautionary requirements, Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission president and elections executive director Nawaf Abdulla Hamza said yesterday.
Bahrain goes to the polls on November 12, to elect 40 members of Parliament and 30 municipal councillors for a four-year term.
Mr Hamza said Covid-19 patients wishing to run for the elections should contact the hotline 77277277 to book an appointment with the relevant supervisory committee, fill in the nomination form (available on vote.bh), and attach the required documents.
Upon arrival at the supervisory committee, the candidate will be received by a committee member to verify his identity. The potential candidate, while in his/her car, should submit the nomination form and the required documents, as well as pay the candidacy fee, Mr Hamza said.
He called upon citizens wishing to run for the elections to verify that they meet the prescribed requirements and have the required documents, by visiting the elections’ website (www.vote.bh).
He pointed out that nomination applications for membership of Parliament and municipal councils should be submitted to the supervisory committees of each candidate, namely the Khawla Secondary Girls’ School for the Capital Governorate (for parliamentary membership only), Al Hidaya Al Khalifiya Secondary Boys’ School for the Muharraq Governorate, the Yathreb Intermediate Girls’ School for the Northern Governorate, and the Al-Mustaqbal Primary Girls’ School for the Southern Governorate, from 5pm to 9pm during the nomination period.
Mr Hamza said those wishing to run for parliamentary elections should pay their candidacy fees (BD200) at the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry. The BD50 fee for municipal elections may be paid at the candidate’s municipality.
Candidates are also allowed to pay their fees at their relevant supervisory committees while submitting their nomination applications.
The candidate lists will be displayed for three days, from October 10 to 12, during which potential candidates may challenge the decisions of the supervisory committees. The committees shall then issue their final decisions by October 15, which may be challenged at the competent court no later than October 18, and the court rulings regarding them shall be issued by October 25.
The final list of candidates will be announced on October 26.
The total number of voters will be disclosed on Thursday.
