BAHRAIN will continue to adopt initiatives and implement projects that will improve and strengthen information security, it was declared yesterday.
National Security Adviser and National Guard Commander Major General Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa pointed out that the kingdom was one of the leading countries in the region in the field of cybersecurity, citing its keenness to develop the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and adopt initiatives and projects to improve the readiness and security of information, in a way that enhances its advanced world-standard digital infrastructure and contributes to protecting its cybersecurity.
He was speaking at the opening of the three-day First Arab International Cybersecurity Conference and Exhibition at Exhibition World Bahrain in Sakhir, on behalf of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
Shaikh Nasser stressed that cybersecurity had become a basic pillar of the ICT sector in the world to confront cyber risks, noting that Bahrain attached special importance to cybersecurity, given its major role in providing cyber protection for all sectors that support the comprehensive development process, led by His Majesty King Hamad and followed up by HRH Prince Salman.
In this regard, he said that Bahrain had launched a National Cybersecurity Strategy that includes basic, interconnected pillars that constitute a comprehensive and coherent framework to maintain a safe and reliable cyberspace in the kingdom.
“Cybersecurity is the foundation to protect all sectors as they advance, grow and develop,” said Shaikh Nasser.
“Holding this event reflects the vitality of the sector as a priority field and gives us the opportunity to learn about new policies, legislations and technologies.”
Meanwhile, Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said the event would certainly help Bahrain as it continues to shift its services electronically.
“There is a comprehensive digitalisation plan being carried out through secure and disciplined cybersecurity standards as we move ahead with more advanced electronic services,” he added.
“Cybersecurity falls within the nation’s full security plans as general crime rates in Bahrain are already dropping.
“Securing and establishing an infrastructure for ICT is set to continue in the most professional way possible despite increased threats.”
He added that cybersecurity was not just the responsibility of the government, but a joint effort with the private sector and users.
Experts from around the world, including industry heavyweights, are in Bahrain to discuss a wide range of issues during the event.
Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA) is showcasing key information and communications technology initiatives and projects aimed at streamlining the digital infrastructure and government services that empower local business environment and digital society.
More than 75 speakers, including senior international cybersecurity decision-makers, leaders, influencers and solution providers are taking part in the event which is expected to attract more than 6,000 visitors, who will engage with the cybersecurity community and hold panel discussions to address the latest cyber risks.
