Scattered rain across Bahrain is expected throughout this week and motorists have been urged to slow down, keep a safe distance from the car in front of them and stop careering across lanes with hazard lights blazing.
The General Traffic Directorate also called upon drivers to strictly follow the speed limits in the hazardous conditions as stopping times differ on slippery surfaces.
According to the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry’s five-day weather forecast, scattered rains are expected across Bahrain until Friday with temperatures dropping to 14C.
The GDN previously reported that a special committee to organise joint action during the rainy season, as well as identify specific waterlogging areas, were among the main recommendations of a key meeting.
Among the recommendations was identifying and listing waterlogging points as well as rainwater drainage sites in co-ordination with the representatives of the concerned government department.
The meeting was organised by the Northern Municipal Council and was attended by Works Ministry representatives, personnel from the Civil Defence, General Traffic Directorate and the Northern Governorate Police Directorate as well as public health officials.
The meeting, which was also attended by officials from the Northern Municipality and the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), was held to co-ordinate a plan ahead of the rainy season.
Once drafted, these recommendations, which include organising the distribution of municipal inspectors and ministry engineers, will be referred to Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak for review and action.
During the meeting, the council also highlighted the importance of providing open lines of communication to tackle emergency cases of flooding while also raising awareness about the importance of ensuring individuals refrain from opening the wastewater channels.
Developing technical specifications to protect the covers of wastewater channels was also deemed critical to ensure the mechanism is controlled.
Earlier last week, tankers were deployed to clear waterlogged neighbourhoods in the Capital Governorate. People in affected areas have been urged to contact the general hotline 80008188.
A team of men and equipment are on standby to tackle any emergencies caused by heavy rains in Bahrain as more than 200 workers have been assigned by the Works Ministry and Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry to deal with waterlogging.
Around 100 pumps and power generators were also distributed across the four governorates to ensure any deluge doesn’t become a dampening disaster.
The ministry also urged individuals to ensure that roofs were properly insulated.
The Civil Defence has also urged people to be cautious in and around the home and follow safety instructions, including avoiding using wet electrical tools and appliances.
