A MAN, who was jailed for five years, for assault, theft and holding another man captive, has appealed his sentence at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
Last month, the High Criminal Court sentenced the 31-year-old Jordanian to jail while sentencing his co-defendant and girlfriend, a 23-year-old Russian woman, to three years behind bars.
Both will be deported after completing their sentences.
Yesterday, the male defendant appeared at the appeals court in his jail uniform.
His mother, who wore a niqab, also came to the hearing and requested to speak to the judges during the hearing.
Although unscheduled, the leading judge allowed the woman to speak. With a trembling voice, the mother pleaded with the judges to be lenient with her son and to let him go as he is her first-born.
She begged the judges to consider her feelings as a mother who is seeing her son behind bars, and told them that she cannot live without him regardless of what crimes he committed.
The judge adjourned the hearing to May 15 for a verdict.
The GDN earlier reported that the duo mugged the Russian defendant’s colleague outside their workplace and stole a vehicle, a credit card and three mobile phones in the process.
The incident, involving a 36-year-old Bangladeshi driver, took place in Manama in December last year when the expat woman was helping the victim use a computer at their office.
Court documents said that she then followed the Bangladeshi outside and forced him into a vehicle with the help of her co-defendant, mugged him and drove away.
The Jordanian, who wore a military uniform, mugged the victim after threatening to attack him with a scalpel. He was found guilty of posing as a BDF personnel.
The pair then managed to steal a BMW vehicle, belonging to the victim’s boss, after snatching its keys, a credit card and three mobile phones from the victim.
The driver, who works at the same contracting company as the Russian woman, jumped out of the moving Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle and managed to reach a nearby police station.
He described his shock when he was mugged by the defendants having just been taught how to use a computer by the female defendant.
