MORE than 270 abandoned cars have had to be carted off to the scrapyard in the Northern Governorate since the beginning of 2023.
The 273 vehicles were cleared by the Northern Municipality as part of campaigns implemented in accordance with the 2019 Public Cleanliness Law.
“The responsibility for preserving the environment and traffic movement is a shared responsibility,” said the Northern Municipality in an official statement released yesterday.
“Abandoning cars on roads causes a lot of environmental damage and confusion in the traffic movement on some roads.
“Some of the parked cars are also a threat to security, in addition to distorting the general aesthetic of the neighbourhood.”
The Northern Municipality said it continues to carry out inspection campaigns and attempts to raise levels of awareness with violations registered and penalties imposed.
According to its statement, the Northern Municipality alerts registered owners to refrain from abandoning their battered old cars in residential neighbourhoods, industrial workshops and open spaces as well as urging people to co-operate with the removal of unloved four-wheeled wrecks.
