TABLE TENNIS – BAHRAIN marched through to the round of 16 yesterday in the men’s teams’ table tennis tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The kingdom’s senior men’s squad – composed of Rashed Sanad, Mohamed Saleh, Mohammed Alaali, and Sayed Mahfoodh – booked their berth after defeating their counterparts from Nepal 3-0 at Sky Hall Toyota.
The result was their lone victory after two assignments in Group C of the preliminary round. They had earlier lost against Chinese Taipei in their opening fixture on Sunday.
The nationals will next face off with Kazakhstan in the last 16. Their head-to-head is scheduled for today at 6.30am, Bahrain time.
In their triumph yesterday against Nepal, Sanad kicked things off by beating Sanyog Kapali 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-4). Saleh then claimed a 3-1 (11-3, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9) win over Rubin Maharjan, before Alaali completed the sweep after emerging victorious 3-0 (13-11, 11-2, 11-9) against Ganajaya Dahal.
In attendance during yesterday’s play was Bahrain Olympic Committee board member and Bahrain Table Tennis Association president Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa.
