A BUSINESSMAN has been sentenced to life in prison for smuggling mind-altering drugs from Oman in his luggage.
The High Criminal Court jailed the 33-year-old Bangladeshi for 25 years after finding him guilty of smuggling almost 5kg of heroin and methamphetamine.
Customs officials had flagged the defendant and upon searching his backpack and suitcase discovered a variety of narcotics hidden among his personal belongings.
Substances in powdered, crystallised, liquid and solid form were seized, along with drug paraphernalia.
Admitted
Despite denying to Customs that the drugs belonged to him, the defendant later admitted to prosecutors the narcotic contents of his bags.
Authorities found 175gm of hashish, 58gm of a crystallised substance and 4,702gm of a transparent fluid, later discovered to be meth, in a glass bottle.
Packets of a beige-coloured powder and heroin were also confiscated.
The defendant said that he had agreed with a person residing in Oman to smuggle in the contraband and hand it over to an individual in Bahrain in return for BD500, although the accomplice could not be identified.
A laboratory analysis revealed traces of morphine and methamphetamine in the defendant’s urine.
