Five Bahrain-based higher education institutions have been accredited by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as health universities.
The accredited institutions are Arabian Gulf University (AGU), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Bahrain, formerly known as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain, Ahlia University, University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) and University College of Bahrain.
Higher Education Council (HEC) secretary general Dr Diana Abdulkarim Al Johromi commended the achievement as she held a meeting with officials representing the Health Ministry and the WHO office in Bahrain.
She stressed co-ordination between the council, ministry and the organisation, noting the importance of joint co-operation to support scientific research.
She urged other higher education institutions to apply for accreditation within the health universities programme after meeting the six mandatory indicators.
Health Ministry’s health consolidation director Dr Wafa Al Sharbati commended the co-operation with the HEC during the phased evaluation process which enabled the universities to obtain their accreditation.
WHO representative in Bahrain Dr Tasnim Al Atatrah outlined the organisation’s duties as well as the objectives and criteria of the health universities programmes.
