HANDBALL – AL Shabab were last night crowned first-time champions of Bahrain handball.
Shabab captured the title in the 2023-24 Khalid bin Hamad Bahrain Handball League after edging past Al Dair 26-23 in a thrilling final, played at Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town.
Nader Sami fired in from seven metres off an assist from Jassim Khamis to give Shabab the lead for good with under eight minutes remaining in the game. That sparked a run of four unanswered conversions for Shabab, who held on until the final buzzer to secure an historic crown.
Shabab, coached by Ahmed Al Madoub, led 13-12 at the half and the match remained close until their late-game rally.
Also playing key roles for the winners were Ahmed Redha, Ahmed Jalal, Sadeq Ali, and goalkeeper Salah Abduljalil.
Following the final, the winners and runners-up were awarded their respective trophies and medals by General Sports Authority (GSA) vice-chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, GSA chief executive Dr Abdulrahman Askar, Bahrain Olympic Committee secretary general Faris Al Kooheji, and Bahrain Handball Federation president Ali Issa.
