The Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC) has approached the Indian External Affairs Ministry seeking a unified law for repatriating to India bodies of people of Indian origin.
The move is based on a recent Delhi High Court judgement on the matter. The Indian mission in London had not given permission to bring the body of a Hyderabad native, who died recently in the UK, to India.
It had taken the position that only dead bodies of Indian citizens could be repatriated to India and there was currently no provision to repatriate bodies of people of Indian origin who have acquired the citizenship of other countries.
The Delhi High Court pointed out that while the Indian embassies in America and Singapore permitted the repatriation of bodies of people of Indian origin to India, the Indian mission in London said that it was illegal to do so.
The petition said that it was in this context that a unified law was needed on the matter, with the expatriate legal cell’s global president Jose Abraham writing to Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar.
The petition also pointed out the problems, including long delays, in bringing bodies of Indians from some countries.
PLC global spokesperson and Bahrain chapter president Sudheer Thirunilath said that it was expected that the Indian government will take an urgent stand on this issue.
