An interesting video of three retired B777-200ER aircraft being transported overland in Saudi Arabia has grabbed the attention of citizens.
The aircraft were being transported from Jeddah to Riyadh, where they will be used for the Boulevard Runway events during the Riyadh Season. They will be converted into shops, restaurants, and used for creating interactive experiences for adults and children as part of the "Boulevard Runway" project, a collaboration between the Saudi's General Entertainment Authority and Saudi Airlines.
The footage shows the complex operation as transporting each aircraft, measuring 64 meters in length and over 6 meters in height, posed a significant challenge due to its size. The height of the aircraft exceeded the vertical clearance of most bridges, resulting in taking a longer route to avoid certain bridges.
The used aircrafts were retired from Saudi Airlines between 2016 and 2017. Their transportation was conducted under tight security, covering a distance of over 1,000 kilometers as they traveled from Jeddah to Medina, then to Qassim, and finally to Riyadh, all under heavy security. This transport marked a first of its kind in Saudi Arabia due to the significant challenges posed by the size and weight of the aircraft.
