Bahrain is positioning itself as a global aviation leader and a hub for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) sector.
Tourism Minister Fatima Al Sairafi said the kingdom continues to showcase its best traditional and modern offerings to the world, with a strategic vision that ‘transcends the region’.
She made the statement in her opening remarks at the 29th edition of Routes World 2024 that kicked off yesterday at the Exhibition World Bahrain. “We are opening new doors for the aviation sector while positioning Bahrain as a leader in global tourism,” she said.
“Events like this directly contribute to our goal of positioning Bahrain as a prime destination for hosting global events and exhibitions, further amplifying our visibility on the world stage.
“We recognise that sustainable growth in tourism is significant for our economy, and the hosting of international events strengthens our bid to become the preferred location for business and leisure travellers alike.”
The premier aviation conference that ends tomorrow is being attended by more than 2,000 individuals including decision-makers from more than 700 of the world’s leading airlines, airports, destinations and industry suppliers, who will hold 9,000 meetings over the three days that will define future global air connectivity.
Ms Al Sairafi highlighted Manama’s designation as the Gulf Tourism Capital for 2024 and said it was one of the outstanding achievements that has further elevated the kingdom’s position.
“Bahrain’s vision transcends the region. We are not just a Gulf destination, we are a gateway to the world,” she said.
“Our visitors from Europe, Asia and the Americas and beyond come to experience our timeless heritage, major attractions and unparalleled hospitality that makes Bahrain unique.
“Bahrain stands proudly as a global travel destination, one where cultures meet, where history and modernity coexist, and where every visitor leaves with memories that last a lifetime.”
The minister added that promoting Bahrain as a global hub for tourism and events is in line with Tourism Strategy 2022-2026.
“It’s also a testament to our commitment to sustainable economic growth, guided by the Economic Vision 2030, our roadmap for a prosperous and sustainable future,” she said.
Similar views were echoed by Transportation and Telecommunication Minister Mohammed Al Kaabi who, in his speech, highlighted that the aviation sector is a cornerstone for economic development as it helps in promotion of trade and international relations. “Our Gulf region, in particular, has emerged as a central hub in the global aviation landscape, with its airports and operators driving significant advancement,” he said.
“Our vision for Bahrain goes beyond just being a stopover point.
“We are committed to cementing our position as a premier hub for global trade and logistics. Our world-class infrastructure, including the modernised seaport, expanded aircraft, cargo facilities and seamless transportation networks, ensures Bahrain’s connectivity to key markets across the globe by air, sea and land.”
Routes World 2024 will feature a variety of discussion sessions and specialised workshops focused on the aviation and air transport industry.
The agenda will include opportunities for intensive networking discussions and the exchange of insights aimed at advancing the aviation sector, both regionally and globally.
Conferences will delve into emerging trends within the air transport sector, competitive dynamics among airlines, logistics companies and airports worldwide.
Key topics will encompass developments in air traffic, financial and operational performance of airlines, prospective growth opportunities, as well as discussions surrounding privatisation, mergers, sustainability initiatives and environmental preservation.
Routes’ events director Steven Small, in his opening remarks, yesterday praised Bahrain for hosting the event and highlighted its key achievements, including the launch of the new passenger terminal in 2021 and its evolution as well as the planned construction of the Greenfield airport project with an estimated investment of $10 billion.
“The Bahrain International Airport is already seeing incredible results, with the first half of the year witnessing a 13.2 per cent increase in passenger volume, including a record high of tourist arrivals in August this year exceeding the last year’s 12.4 million visitors.”
