GYMNASIADE – Bahrain is exerting all efforts in the organisation of the ISF Gymnasiade Bahrain 2024.
Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) chairman, and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa reviewed last night the progress of the executive committee for the prestigious International School Sport Federation (ISF) event, which will be held under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad.
The Gymnasiade is set to take place from October 23 to 31 in various locations across the island.
Shaikh Khalid was updated on the executive committee’s organisational efforts, led by BOC board member and Bahrain Handball Federation president Ali Issa, during the sixth meeting of the GSA board.
In attendance were GSA deputy chairman Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, GSA CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar, and GSA board members.
Shaikh Khalid praised the work in preparing for the event, which is set to feature more than 70 countries from all corners of the globe, with approximately 5,400 athletes, coaches, referees, and officials participating in 26 different sports.
Bahrain will be fielding 385 athletes in the Gymnasiade, part of a full delegation of 463.
Shaikh Khalid was also briefed on the ongoing maintenance of venues and sports facilities under the GSA’s supervision.
Several locations across the kingdom will be utilised for the Gymnasiade’s events, including Isa Sports City and Khalifa Sports City, the sports arenas in Um Al Hassam, sports halls at clubs and universities, and various other sites.
The sports that will be a part of the Gymnasiade’s programme are archery, athletics, badminton, 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, dance sport, fencing, aerobic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, handball, judo, karate, orienteering, padel, Para athletics, Para badminton, Para judo, Para swimming, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and wrestling.
During the event, a number of cultural, educational, and entertainment programmes will also be held for the athletes and guests. These will reflect Bahraini culture and thus enhance the overall experience for the participants, in addition to competition.
Meanwhile, Shaikh Khalid reviewed the GSA’s recent work plan, which includes various sports initiatives such as the Khalid bin Hamad Golden Generation Athletics League and the Golden Bank Initiative.
The efforts towards upcoming activities, including the Shaikh Abdullah bin Khalid bin Hamad Academy for football and the Khalid bin Hamad Gold Generation League, were also discussed, alongside other programmes aimed at advancing sports.
Shaikh Khalid also directed to intensify efforts towards the privatisation of sports facilities and the issuance of regulations governing sports investment. He was briefed on amendments to the model regulations for national clubs.
