TAEKWONDO – BAHRAIN has been selected as the host nation for the inaugural World Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships 2024, while the kingdom will also stage the Bahrain Para Taekwondo Open 2024, it was announced yesterday.
A memorandum of understanding confirming the two global Para taekwondo events was signed by Bahrain Paralympic Committee (BPC) secretary general Ali Mohamed Almajed and World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) president Dr Chungwon Choue.
The pair of competitions are scheduled to be held on November 26 and 27, and on November 29, respectively.
Yesterday’s announcement coincides with the WTF’s attendance at the largest International School Sport Federation (ISF) event in history – the ISF Gymnasiade Bahrain 2024, being held in Bahrain under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Commenting on this occasion, Almajed expressed his pride in Bahrain’s selection as the host for these global Para taekwondo sporting events. He extended his gratitude to the WTF for its confidence in Bahrain as a world-class sporting hub and premier destination for sports tourism, along with the Bahrain Taekwondo Federation.
Almajed highlighted the significance of hosting sport events as integral to Bahrain’s efforts in advancing a holistic development of the sports sector and promoting an inclusive community culture that embraces all talents.
He emphasised that these championships not only encourage the participation of athletes of all abilities but also reinforce values of empowerment and support for those with impairments, enhancing both local and international sporting landscapes with inspiring success stories.
Almajed further noted the important role of these global events in building Bahraini expertise across technical, medical, and operational domains within sports, thereby fostering an environment that nurtures talent across various fields and abilities.
Echoing these sentiments, Dr Choue praised the close, productive collaboration with the BPC, expressing his appreciation for Bahrain’s commitment to establishing itself as a global sporting destination and a supportive platform for Para athletes from around the world to showcase their skills.
He reaffirmed the WTF’s confidence in Bahrain’s ability to deliver a successful first-ever World Para Taekwondo Poomsae Championships and Bahrain Para Taekwondo Open, marking an historic milestone for the sport.
