Two men who allegedly ran over a Bahraini man with their car outside a nightclub were in an ‘abnormal condition’, a court heard.
The Saudi nationals, both aged 24, have been charged with killing the 42-year-old Mohamed Al Enezi in a hit-and-run on August 1.
Two hotel employees, both Egyptian nationals, who were standing outside the club with the victim, gave their testimonies while recounting the tragedy at the High Criminal Court yesterday.
“The Saudi men were in an abnormal condition and were causing trouble as they tried to enter the venue at around 10pm,” said the first witness.
“We were forced to deny them entry, but that just agitated them more,” he added.
“An argument broke out and they began pushing, shoving and physically assaulting the three of us, but we managed to subdue them and they went away.
“A few hours later, at around 1am, we were standing outside the nightclub when a car drove towards us at a high speed and crashed into the 42-year-old victim.”
The second witness, a security guard at the nightclub, echoed the statements of the first, adding that attempts were made to de-escalate the situation before it got worse.
“We denied the men access to the premises and they created a ruckus,” said the second witness.
“We tried to reason with them, but they were too intoxicated and refused to listen to us.
“The more we tried to talk to them, the more agitated they became and started pushing us, and so we pushed back in self-defence.
“They came back later and the driver rammed the car into the victim who was thrown almost 10 metres away into a sandy area near the hotel.”
According to court documents, the two accused allegedly rushed back to another hotel where they were staying, changed their clothes and checked out before heading back to Saudi Arabia via King Fahad Causeway.
Only one of them, the passenger, was arrested about three weeks after the incident as he returned to Bahrain.
The driver still remains at large and is facing charges relating to murder and attempted murder in absentia.
An international arrest warrant has been issued to apprehend and extradite him to the country.
According to a Public Prosecution report, the two men planned to attack the trio outside the hotel, but ended up killing the Bahraini victim.
Though police and an ambulance crew arrived promptly at the scene, efforts to rescue the Bahraini ended in vain.
A police captain who was dispatched to the scene told the prosecution that the collision was captured on security cameras and that Mr Al Enezi had died instantly.
During last week’s session, the lawyer representing the family of the victim said that they would sue the accused for damages if the court convicted them of murder.
Three more witnesses will give their testimonies during next week’s session on November 11.
