BADMINTON – ACTION gets underway today in the kingdom’s top-ranked badminton tournament, The Al Sharif Group Bahrain International Series II 2024, powered by Yonex.
The six-day competition, being held under the patronage of the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation (BBSF), is set to take place at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS) premises in Salmaniya.
The event is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation under the regional Badminton Asia confederation. More than 150 players from over 20 countries from around the world are set to compete.
Amongst the top players in the men’s singles competition are world number 87 Dmitriy Panarin of Kazakhstan; Vishal Vasudevan and Manraj Singh of India, who are ranked 131st and 159th in the world; and world number 229 Bharaath Latheesh of the UAE.
Adnan Ebrahim is the top-ranked Bahraini men’s entrant in 465th in the world, while also flying the kingdom’s flag are Sayed Ebrahim Hasan, and Nasser Alnakkas.
Hasan will have a tough task in his very first match as he will face off with Panarin. Alnakkas will take on Amirhossein Hasani of Iran, and Ebrahim will play Vasudevan.
In the women’s singles, the top-ranked participant is world number 121 Hristomira Popovska of Bulgaria. She is joined in Bahrain by world number 137 Wiktoria Dabczynska of Poland, world number 142 Ranithma Liyanage of Sri Lanka, and Stefani Stoeva, also of Bulgaria, who is 206th in the world.
There are a number of Bahraini players who will be looking to qualify for both the men’s and women’s singles main draws.
Meanwhile, amongst the doubles pairings, Ivan Rusev and Iliyan Stoynov of Bulgaria are the top-ranked pairing from the men, Stefani Stoeva and Gabriela Stoeva are top seeds in the women’s event, and Tarun Kona and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli of India are the top-ranked tandem in the mixed doubles.
