A man who fraudulently obtained BD8,000 from several people by using social media to ‘sell’ gold jewellery is standing trial at the Lower Criminal Court.
According to a report by the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security, one of the victims purchased gold jewellery from the social media account, which had tens of thousands of followers, for BD640.
She paid the accused using an electronic payment app, but he never delivered the promised goods to her.
After conducting intensive investigations, the accused was found to have a criminal record with multiple frauds to his name.
He allegedly created the account, and conned a group of victims into paying him an amount totalling BD8,000 for non-existent jewellery.
Upon interrogation, he admitted to the accusations against him.
