Two young men in Ahmedabad died after a speeding Hyundai Creta jumped over the road divider and crashed into their scooter in the opposite lane.
The accident, captured by a CCTV camera, occurred on the Naroda-Dehgam road in Ahmedabad. The SUV driver, Gopal Patel, has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The footage shows the SUV driver losing control of the vehicle in a bid to overtake a three-wheeler at high speed.
After this, it crashes into a scooter coming from opposite roads. Amit Rathore (26) and Vishal Rathore (27), who were on the scooter, died on the spot.
Residents and passers-by thrashed the SUV's driver after the crash and handed him over to the police.
The accused will be charged under the anti-prohibition law in Gujarat, a dry state.
A report by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry last year revealed that India reported over 4.61 lakh accidents in 2022 and over 1.68 lakh deaths in road crashes, with 70% of the victims under 45.
