The Sultanate of Oman today marked World Intellectual Property Day 2026, which took the theme “Intellectual Property (IP) and Sport: Get Ready, Launch, Innovate”.
The event affirms the basic role of intellectual property in supporting innovation in the sports sector. It seeks to convert sports into a sustainable economic industry, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
A ceremony to this effect was organised by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.
The ceremony, which saw the participation of Oman Automobile Association, included visual presentations and specialised working papers that elaborated on the concepts of intellectual property and the Omani sports strategy.
Eng. Khalid bin Hamoud Al Hinai, Director of the National Office of Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, said that Oman’s observation of the global event reflects growing interest in IP rights as a basic pillar in developing the sports sector.
The event underscores keenness to transform the sports sector into an integrated industry based on innovation and investment in a manner that fits with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. The event also affirms the protection of trademarks and the rights to innovation across various segments of the sports sector, ensure its steady growth and sustainability, said Al Hinai.
For his part, Ghalib bin Mohammed Al Saidi, an intellectual property researcher at the Office for Intellectual Property at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, stressed the importance of intellectual property and its role in the sports sector.
He pointed out that the significance of intellectual property lies in the fact that it protects the national identity and the trademarks of sports institutions, including TV rights to broadcast matches and events and the regulation of support to innovation across other segments of the sports system.
