Bahrain will host the meeting of the standing committee on economic and sustainable development of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) next week.
Seventy members representing 16 member states of the APA will take part in the event on Sunday and Monday.
The meeting, chaired by APA vice-president and APA financial and economic affairs committee chairman MP Ahmed Al Salloom, will discuss seven draft resolutions.
These include establishing an Asian energy market, addressing environmental issues, ensuring the sustainability of economic growth efforts and the role of the APA in supporting the implementation of sustainable development goals.
Other topics include water and sanitation issues in Asian countries and climate finance initiatives.
Committee members will also be elected during the meeting.
“The event underscores the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and highlights Bahrain’s international standing as a host of global parliamentary meetings,” said Mr Al Salloom, who is also Bahrain’s Parliament’s financial and economic affairs committee chairman.
Challenges
“It aims to foster the exchange of expertise, discuss shared challenges and enhance co-ordination and collaboration among Asian nations to serve the common interests of their people.
“The meeting also provides an opportunity to showcase Bahrain’s democratic experience, legislative achievements and progress in enacting laws and promoting democratic practices.”
A GCC preparatory meeting is set for Saturday to unify visions on all scheduled issues, before the executive office of the APA holds a meeting the same night.
The APA’s work teams are set to meet on Sunday to review potential proposals presented by participants, which will be then highlighted during the main standing committee’s meeting on Monday.
