A large and complex tumour was removed from a 50-year-old patient’s left kidney in a successful surgery performed by the Government Hospital’s urology team.
The operation, held under the supervision of consultant urologist Dr Abdulsalam Ahmadi at Salmaniya Medical Complex, ‘is a milestone for the kingdom’s medical sector’, the Government Hospitals said in a statement yesterday.
The tumour posed a major challenge as it occupied a large area of the abdominal cavity, causing severe pressure on the intestines. It was also dangerously close to major blood vessels, the statement added.
The surgery required careful planning and was meticulously executed using the latest medical technologies.
Symptoms of a tumour in the kidney includes blood in the urine, pain in the side or lower back, a lump in the abdomen, constant tiredness, unexplained weight loss and fever.
Causes vary, but include smoking, exposure to chemicals such as arsenic, obesity and high blood pressure.
“The patient has left the hospital and is in good health,” the statement added.
“This achievement reflects the high level of efficiency and skill of the national medical cadres, in addition to the commitment of Government Hospitals to providing high-quality medical services.”
