Since Bahrain hosted the Formula 1 race first in the Middle East in 2004, it has cemented its status as a pioneer in organising world-class sporting events. This bold move opened wide horizons for investment and tourism and contributed significantly to diversifying the national economy beyond its traditional reliance on oil.
The inauguration of the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir was a historic milestone – not only for local sports but for the entire region. Thanks to the vision and support of the kingdom’s wise leadership, Bahrain has become an annual destination for motorsport fans from across the globe. The race is watched by millions worldwide, while tens of thousands of fans travel to Bahrain each year. It is no exaggeration to say that Bahrain is now globally recognised, in large part, due to this world-renowned event.
Formula 1 is far more than just a sporting event – it is an entire industry. Estimates suggest that the race contributes tens of millions of dollars annually to the local economy through spending on accommodation, dining, transport, shopping and logistics. It creates thousands of jobs – both temporary and permanent – across various sectors and stimulates air traffic and tourism.
In recent years, as global awareness of environmental issues has grown, Bahrain has embraced sustainability in organising the race by incorporating hybrid and environmentally-friendly technologies. This reflects the kingdom’s commitment to innovation and to setting a balanced example of modernity and sustainability.
Through Formula 1, Bahrain has successfully introduced itself to a vast global audience and proven its ability to host major events with professional excellence. The success of the race has extended beyond the track, becoming a launchpad for a series of cultural and sporting events that further enhance Bahrain’s image as a vibrant and evolving destination.
This success has earned Bahrain the trust of international organisations, which now recognise the competence and dedication of Bahraini professionals in organising and managing such events. This paved the way for hosting other major championships, such as Formula 2, Formula 3, and regional endurance and karting competitions.
More than 20 years after the first race, it is clear that Formula 1 in Bahrain is no longer a seasonal highlight, but a sustained success story. It is the embodiment of an ambitious economic vision, aimed at diversifying revenue streams and engraving Bahrain’s name in the global memory of sport.
With every new season, Bahrain has a renewed opportunity to shine on the world stage – offering a picture that blends authenticity with progress, and proving that a small country in size can be monumental in ambition.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, affirmed during this year’s race that Bahrain’s continued success in hosting international sports events is made possible by the efforts of its national workforce. He praised the organisational talents of Bahraini professionals, which have strengthened the kingdom’s reputation as a prime destination for world-class sports – including motorsport – supporting Bahrain’s comprehensive development under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad.
This recognition is a badge of honour for every Bahraini who contributed directly to this historic achievement. It is also a powerful motivation to strive for further success across all sectors.
Although I wasn’t able to attend this year’s race due to being in Istanbul, what truly warmed my heart was hearing a Turkish citizen speak about his experience attending the 2023 race in Bahrain. He was full of praise for the event’s outstanding organisation and the impressive progress he saw across all aspects of life in the kingdom. He especially highlighted the warmth and sincerity of the Bahraini people, whom he described as a key reason for the event’s success – an opinion widely shared by many.
The praise is nothing new; Bahrainis are truly worthy of recognition. They continue to prove themselves time and time again – renowned for their strong sense of responsibility and unwavering loyalty to their leadership and the nation.
