As temperatures soar and jet ski activity peaks, a top official is urging riders to prioritise safety before even entering the water.
With more people turning to the sea to beat the heat, head of Hidd Police Station Colonel Dr Osama Bahar is reminding jet skiers to follow safety guidelines and avoid risky behaviour.
Speaking on the Al Aman show on social media, he urged a thorough and comprehensive check of safety requirements and guidelines.
“There is no doubt that jet skiing is one of the most beautiful water sports, one that is popular among both young people and adults in Bahrain,” said Col Dr Bahar.
“Therefore, there must be an emphasis on personal safety when on the jet ski.
“Before you go out, check the weather forecast at least one day before, either using your phone or the weather application.
“Learn about the wind speed and how it will be throughout the day.
“You must also check the engine and fuel.”
Jet skiing is a widely-spread summer activity in Bahrain, with the most popular locations being in Manama, Amwaj Islands, Jarada Island and Malkiya Beach.
In 2022, the Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry issued clear and tough guidelines for jet ski usage.
They can only be used during daylight hours by riders who must be aged 16 or older. Younger riders must be accompanied by a guardian. In rental agencies, riders must be at least 18 years old.
Life jackets are mandatory, no racing or unsafe movements are allowed, and they must maintain a 10-metre distance from other vehicles, and a 100m distance from swimming zones and beaches.

Col Dr Bahar reiterated the above regulations and urged all riders to follow them without fail.
“Ensure you have a life jacket ready for you and for those who will be coming with you,” he said.
“Have your phone with you at all times and keep it in a place where it will remain dry.
“Keep the key of the jet ski attached to your wrist, and have water and suitable food prepared.
“Keep an appropriate distance from not just the coast, but also from other vessels and jet skiers.
“Finally, avoid risky situations, do not disturb people at the beach or go too far out into the sea, unless you are with a group of people that you trust.
“Ensure you go back to shore at suitable times, especially before sunset as jet skis can only be legally operated during the day time.”
Last year, the GDN reported about reckless jet skiers who are allegedly endangering lives by roaring along the coasts and performing stunts in Amwaj Islands.
Residents of Floating City have claimed that they have been overwhelmed with jet skiers, especially during weekends in summer, as they roam the area with no regards for people’s safety.
Coastguard Commander Brigadier Jassim Al Ghatam told MPs that there were 58 accidents involving youths on jet skis last year.
