CYCLING – BAHRAIN Victorious Development Team rider Jakob Omrzel powered to an impressive victory in the 53rd GP Capodarco Comunita Di Capodarco road race in Italy.
The one-day event featured the world’s best under-23 cyclists who battled it out over 175.5 kilometres.
Omrzel captured his maiden victory in a single-day ride in his age class.
The Slovenian’s Italian teammate Elia Andreaus was active the whole day in the front, getting in every breakaway attempt and just getting caught at two km to the finish.
Omrzel was well protected in the bunch by teammates Alessandro Borgo and Santiago Basso, competing in their home race, while Kasper Borremans from Finland helped him in the final to join him in the top 10 of the final classification in eighth place.
Omrzel completed the distance in four hours six minutes and 10 seconds – eight seconds ahead of runner-up Pavel Novak of MBH Bank Ballan CSB. Novak’s teammate Cesare Chesini followed in third place 11s from the front.
Borremans was 35s back, while Andreaus came 26th and Borgo 64th, while Basso did not finish.
Omrzel is one of the top talents on the Bahrain Victorious Development Team.
The squad is part of Team Bahrain Victorious’ commitment to growing young talent in cycling and setting them up for success as they look to enter the UCI WorldTour (WT) – the premier international road racing series held annually, sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the sport’s worldwide governing body.
