CYCLING – Team Bahrain Victorious rider Fred Wright claimed a strong top 10 finish yesterday in the third stage of the 20th Renewi Tour in Belgium.
The Briton completed the 181.8-kilometre leg in sixth place, a little over half-a-minute behind winner Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Deceuninck, who won in three hours 50 minutes 53 seconds.
Teammate Matej Mohoric followed in 21st while Robert Stannard was 27th. Fran Miholjevic and Matevz Govekar were 60th and 61st, respectively, and rounding out Bahrain Victorious’ riders were Daniel Skerl in 100th and Kamil Gradek in 117th.
With yesterday’s results, Wright climbed eight positions to fifth as the team’s leading competitor on the race’s general classification.
Skerl was ninth on the young rider standings while the Bahrain Victorious squad improved to fifth on the race’s teams’ rankings.
Meanwhile, in the 40th Lidl Deutschland Tour in Germany, Edoardo Zambanini was Bahrain Victorious’ top finisher in yesterday’s second stage in 13th.
Zambanini was part of a large group that followed winner Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who completed the 190.3km leg in 4:27:10.
Teammates Niklas Arndt and Vlad van Mechelen were also in that pack in 18th and 21st, while Zak Erzen was 60th, Phil Bauhaus 61st, and Alberto Bruttomesso 88th.
Van Mechelen was the team’s best-placed on the GC in 12th, while staying in the top 10 in the young rider rankings in eighth. Bahrain Victorious improved three places to seventh amongst the participating teams.
Both elite men’s road races continue today.
