ATHLETICS – Bahrain's superstar sprinter Salwa Eid Naser will be looking to add another major accolade to her already glittering career when she competes today in the women’s 400 metres final at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.
Naser is the event’s 2019 world champion and the winner of this season’s Diamond Trophy from the Wanda Diamond League final just last month.
She is one of the favourites in today’s race, scheduled for a 4.24pm start, Bahrain time, at Japan’s nearly 70,000-capacity National Stadium.
Naser has been slotted into late seven.
Amongst her other competitors in a star-studded field are reigning world and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone from the US, who are considered her chief rivals for the gold.
The rest of the race line-up also features top-quality athletes, including Natalia Bukowiecka from Poland, Henriette Jaeger from Norway, Amber Anning from the UK, Roxana Gomez from Cuba, and Nickisha Pryce from Jamaica.
Heading into the final, Naser has a season’s best time of 48.67s, while her personal best is 48.14s.
McLaughlin-Levrone currently has the world lead of 48.29s, which she clocked in the semi-finals on Tuesday.
Naser will not only be looking to add a second world title to her trophy cabinet – she will also be hoping to claim a fourth world medal, adding to her 2019 gold, her women’s 400m silver in 2017, and her bronze medal as part of Bahrain’s mixed 4x400m relay team, also in 2019.
