Police officers in the US were caught in clouds of tear gas during clashes with protesters in Chicago after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel deployed the riot control agent.
@themanwithnoname46 A number of Chicago police officers got tear gassed, by ICE. Apparently the cops were there to separate protesters from attacking ICE officers when this happened. #ICE #chicago #chicagopolice #protesters #teargas ♬ original sound - numbnuts69
In a now-viral video filmed by a witness, several officers can be seen rubbing their eyes, squinting, and struggling with the after-effects of the gas deployed during clashes on October 4.
In the video, people nearby can be heard shouting “Wake up, wake up!” and “Arrest ICE” as the officers attempted to recover.
Local officials have raised concerns about ICE’s use of crowd-control measures in the city, with authorities criticising the deployment of tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets, warning that they pose risks not only to protesters and bystanders but also to police officers and firefighters working at the scene.
