BASKETBALL – THE Bahrain Super Cup for the 2025-26 national basketball season is scheduled to take place this Thursday, the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) announced yesterday.
The game will be held between reigning Zain Bahrain Basketball League champions Muharraq, who are also the Khalifa bin Salman Cup holders, and long-time rivals Manama, who Muharraq defeated to claim last season’s Khalifa bin Salman Cup title.
The Bahrain Super Cup is held annually as the traditional curtain-raiser to the new national basketball campaign. It is scheduled for a 7pm tip-off on Thursday night at the BBA Arena in Um Al Hassam.
Manama were the winners of last year’s Bahrain Super Cup after defeating Al Ahli in the single-game affair. The contest was part of the Bahrain Egypt Super Cup – held for the first time and which included two clubs from Egypt, namely Al Ittihad Alexandria and Al Ahly.
Meanwhile, the BBA – in cooperation with BS Action, a Bahrain-based official media partner of the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) – will pay tribute to long-time national team point guard and former skipper Hussain Shaker in an honouring ceremony before the Bahrain Super Cup tips off on Thursday.
Shaker has retired from competitive basketball having played and won multiple titles with some of the kingdom’s top clubs, including Ahli, Manama, Muharraq, and Al Najma.
Shaker will be celebrated for his illustrious career and contributions to Bahrain basketball as a player. He will now be moving on to coaching.
