In a scene straight out of a bad soap opera, a couple's marriage is currently on hold after it was revealed that the bride's father had eloped with the groom's mother right before the engagement.
The incident happened in the city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, India.
According to reports, the groom's mother had gone missing before the engagement, which made the son file a missing persons report. The police began their investigation and tracked the woman down to a neighbouring village a week later, where she was found living with a 50-year-old farmer.
Further investigation revealed that the man who had been living with the woman was actually the bride's father.
The man had reportedly lost his wife some time ago and was now living alone with his two daughters. One of the daughters was recently engaged to the son of the woman who went 'missing'.
The man and woman met during preparations for the engagement, during which the would-be in-laws developed feelings for each other, eventually deciding to run away together.
The town police inspector said, "A missing report was filed eight days ago for a 45-year-old woman. Our investigation revealed that she had left her husband and two children, aged 18 and 20, and gone with a 50-year-old farmer whose daughter was to be engaged to her son. The engagement had not yet taken place. Both have expressed their desire to live together."
Even after being found, the woman is reportedly refusing to leave her lover, stating she wants to stay with him.
