Bahrain has officially launched the National Innovation Strategy 2025-2035 during Global Entrepreneurship Week, marking an ambitious national drive to establish the country as a leading regional hub for innovation and a knowledge-based economy.
The strategy, unveiled by Industry and Commerce Minister Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro at the American University of Bahrain (AUBH), is positioned as an embodiment of the vision of His Majesty King Hamad and implements the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to support productivity and promising sectors.
The strategy sets several ambitious Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive measurable progress by 2035.
Specifically, it targets boosting Research and Development (R&D) investment to reach two per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Focusing on talent, the goal is to qualify and train a minimum of 6,000 Bahrainis in advanced technology fields.
In Intellectual Property (IP) protection, the strategy aims for a doubling of national patents by 2027, a 25pc increase in the registration of industrial designs by 2030, and a 20pc rise in national trademark applications by 2030.
Finally, the strategy seeks to increase employment opportunities in innovation-related sectors by 50pc. A dedicated national task force, including representatives from government, the private sector and academic institutions, has been formed to oversee implementation and submit periodic progress reports toward these goals.
“This strategy represents an ambitious national step towards building a knowledge and innovation-based economy, thereby enhancing the kingdom’s position as a regional hub for innovation and pioneering ideas,” Mr Fakhro said.
