TENNIS – Bahrain made a rousing start to their preliminary round campaign yesterday in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group V 2025 tournament, currently being held at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
The hosts outclassed their counterparts from Bangladesh 3-0 in their Pool C contest.
Elyas Abduljalil kicked things off with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Zarif Abrar.
Yusuf Qaed followed suit with a come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Zubin Omar.
Hasan Abdulnabi and Ahmed Alsayed then completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Bangladesh’s pair of MD Imon and Mohammad Rustom Ali.
Also yesterday, Turkmenistan defeated Brunei 3-0 in another divisional clash.
The Bahrainis are back in action today against Brunei, while Turkmenistan face Bangladesh.
In other action in the preliminaries, Northern Mariana Islands outplayed Yemen 3-0 in Pool A, Mongolia beat Myanmar 2-1 in Pool B, and Maldives defeated the UAE 2-1 while Tajikistan beat Macau 2-1 in Pool D.
The event features 14 senior men’s national teams from across the continent who are vying for two available places in Asia/Oceania Group IV next year.
Following a single round-robin, the top sides from each pool move on to the pair of play-off match-ups for promotion.
This year’s Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV is part of a series of major international tennis events being hosted by the kingdom this month and next.
