The US Naval Support Activity (NSA) base in Juffair went into lockdown yesterday (Nov 25) after a 'potential threat' was identified.
The base's public affairs team confirmed the incident, which resulted in movement being restricted across the facility, including the Bahrain School.
"One of our military working dogs identified a potential threat and, out of an abundance of caution, movement was temporarily restricted throughout the base to ensure the safety and security of our personnel, which included restricting movement at the Bahrain School as well," an NSA spokesperson told the GDN.
"Naval Security Forces have responded, and we have no additional information at this time."
Sources told the GDN that students were asked to stay back after school while the threat was assessed.
In text message alerts sent to base personnel, officials noted that there was no "imminent threat" however out of caution, students from Bahrain School had to be held back at campus until the "safest and soonest opportunity".
Earlier in the day, in an unrelated incident, there was a false alert at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, where the US Air Force's largest expeditionary wing is based.
"During a planned exercise on Al Udeid Air Base, an inaccurate alert was communicated through emergency channels, resulting in a brief base wide lockdown," the base announced on its social media channel.
"The base is secure, and there is no actual threat. The issue has been resolved."
