A young hero in Egypt is being celebrated for his extraordinary courage and selflessness after sacrificing his life to save 13 university students from drowning in Sinai.
Hassan Ahmed El Gazzar, 22, from Meniel Doweib village in Menoufia, witnessed a minibus carrying 13 female students plunge into a river after a tyre burst caused the vehicle to overturn.
Despite being unable to swim, El Gazzar jumped into the water, forced open the rear door of the submerged minibus, and rescued the girls one by one until all were safely out.
Exhausted from the immense physical effort, El Gazzar tragically lost his strength and drowned. He had travelled to Sinai seeking work to support his young family, leaving behind three daughters.
“My son died a hero, and I am proud of him,” his grieving father told local media.
Social media users across Egypt are calling for El Gazzar to be awarded a national medal of honour and recognised as a martyr, praising his sacrifice that spared dozens of families from unimaginable loss.
In response, Egypt’s Ministry of Social Solidarity announced financial support for the family, granting 100,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately BD790) in compensation and pledged to cover the educational expenses of his daughters.
