Due to the plethora of advertisements in Bahrain, I was somewhat surprised to read in the GDN that requests for permission to advertise are carefully scrutinised for content, location, size etc.
In commercial areas and along busy highways and motorways, there are adverts along the roads and pavements, on top of high buildings, on shops and commercial businesses and above them ... to the extent that directional signs are almost obliterated!
Many of these are digital which are very distracting to motorists, particularly during the night.
Have these officials taken a good, hard look at areas in Bahrain where advertisements cover almost every building and the whole place looks like a junk yard?
Many of these adverts are promoting items such as fast food about which there are countless articles, outlining their effects on health.
I was particularly appalled when Parliament suggested putting digital screens in various public parks where people go to relax and get away from this.
Bahrain is a very small country and is being spoiled by this lack of control.
Advertising will not go away but please can we be selective as to where and what!
