BASKETBALL – AL Ahli claimed a stunning 78-65 victory over defending champions Muharraq last night in the 2025-26 Zain Bahrain Basketball League.
Ahli were in control for virtually the entire contest. They built leads as big as their final winning margin of 13 points in both halves and held their opponents off late on to hand them their first defeat of this campaign.
Ahli’s veteran power forward and skipper Mohammed Qurban led a balanced attack for the victors, who had six players finish in double figures. Qurban had 15 points off the bench while Hesham Sarhan contributed 14 and Hamad Faisal 13.
Maitham Jameel and Elijah Tillman both finished with double-doubles for Ahli – Jameel scored 11 points and dished out 10 assists, while Tillman also had 11 points while taking down 13 rebounds.
Nick West paced Muharraq with 19 in the loss, while Ali Hussain had 15, both off the bench. None of Muharraq’s starters scored more than nine points.
Ahli took a slim 21-15 lead at the end of the first and then a Sarhan lay-up made it 38-25 before they closed out the half up just 38-37. They remained in front in the third and took a 59-53 advantage into the final frame, where Muharraq got to within five points but no closer.
With the result, which wrapped up gameweek 10, Ahli claimed their fifth win after 10 outings in this season’s top-tier premier division while snapping Muharraq’s eight-game winning streak.
League action is scheduled to resume on Monday next week.
