Pressure is growing on Britain’s King Charles to cancel a planned 2026 visit to the US for its 250th independence anniversary.
The diplomatic trip is now shrouded in controversy due to escalating trade tensions between Washington and its European allies, with British newspapers highlighting concerns over April’s proposed trip and one polling its readers over the issue.
Trump has threatened initial tariffs of 10 per cent on the UK, France, Germany and Denmark, rising to 25 per cent if the nations do not withdraw their support for Greenland’s status, currently an autonomous territory of Denmark.
The trade measures are directly linked to Trump’s renewed campaign to take over Greenland with a deal or even force. Washington’s targeting of Nato allies has unsettled Westminster.
Conservative MP Simon Hoare has publicly urged that the state visit be cancelled immediately. Writing on social media, he stated the ‘civilised world can deal with Trump no longer’, describing the US President’s tactics as those of a ‘gangster pirate’.
Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey argued that proceeding with the visit would simply reward ‘outrageous tariffs’ with the royal pageantry the President craves.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is coming under growing pressure to call off the King and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the US, as it’s the government that decides where members of the Royal Family travel to, not the Palace. All abroad trips are conducted on the advice of the Foreign Office.
