The Sultanate of Oman today took part in the 29th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, held in the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The Omani delegation was headed by Abdullah bin Nasser Al Rahbi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Arab Republic of Egypt and its Permanent Representative to the Arab League, acting on behalf of Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology.
The meeting discussed ways to develop the sector of telecommunications and information technology in Arab countries, keep pace with the rapid global digital transformations and consolidate joint Arab cooperation in areas of modern technology.
The meeting approved the formation of an Arab Artificial Intelligence Committee to be entrusted with coordinating Arab efforts in this vital area.
The session focused on the need to enhance joint Arab cooperation in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI), build capacities and exchange expertise for addressing the growing digital challenges.
In a speech at the session, Al Rahbi laid emphasis on the importance of boosting joint Arab cooperation in the field of cybersecurity, due to the escalating global cyber threats and related challenges posed to digital infrastructure and information security.
Al Rahbi outlined the progress made recently by the Sultanate of Oman in the fields of communications and information technology, noting that those efforts covered the development of communications infrastructure, the expansion of broadband and fibre optic networks, the digitisation of government services and the consolidation of data governance with a view to boosting digital transition and sustainable development process.
Al Rahbi also spoke about Oman’s efforts to promote investment in the sector of communications and information technology, AI and cybersecurity. He underlined Oman’s keenness to build national capabilities, encourage innovation and use modern technologies to improve the quality of services and bolster the national economy.
Through its participation in the meeting, Oman affirmed its support for Arab efforts aimed at strengthening integration in the sector of communications and information technology, as well as initiatives that contribute to the safe and responsible use of modern technologies in a manner that achieves the interests of Arab countries and serves the aspirations of their people.
