Egyptian prankster and television host Ramez Galal’s latest show is once again shrouded in controversy. The programme, which recently began airing for its 15th consecutive Ramadan, is facing legal challenges as calls for its cancellation grow louder than ever.
This season’s Ramez Level El Wahsh (Ramez Beast Level) launched at the start of Ramadan with an episode featuring Egyptian actress Asmaa Galal. The actress has reportedly initiated legal action after Galal allegedly made offensive remarks during the programme, body-shaming her and mocking her personal life and career.
Netizens expressed outrage over the remarks, with many commenting that the show reinforces outdated sexist values and seeks to humiliate women for entertainment. Egyptian MP Mahmood Sayid Al Manofi has since sent a briefing request to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Information, demanding the programme be banned for "enforcing values of physical and mental bullying and threatening societal values".
The show, which gained international notoriety for pranking Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan in 2017, has faced numerous calls for bans over the years as its stunts have become increasingly intense. In 2020, a lawsuit filed by former Zamalek president Mortada Mansour sought to suspend the programme; however, it was ultimately unsuccessful and the show continued to air.
