Bahrain has offered its citizens a double delight ahead of Ramadan, which begins later this month.
Yesterday’s Cabinet session, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, at Gudaibiya Palace, doubled Ramadan social security allowances and offered a reprieve in electricity charges for citizens’ primary residences.
HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister directed officials to double financial support for eligible individuals receiving social security and disability allowances in observance of the holy month.
He directed the Social Development Ministry to distribute the financial support before Ramadan to guarantee adequate living standards for citizens, particularly those in low-income groups.
The Cabinet also decided to amend the electricity tariff for consumption ranging between 5,000 and 7,000 units, setting the tariff at 16 fils per unit instead of 32 for citizens’ primary residences.
Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Yasser Humaidan later said the new tariff will be applied to bills retroactively from January 1 for citizens’ first homes.
The Cabinet decision reflects the commitment to a partnership-based and constructive approach between the executive and legislative authorities, he said.
Mr Humaidan noted that the views of members of Parliament played an effective role in reaching this amendment, which takes into account citizens’ needs and ensures efficient and effective electricity and water services.
