Bahrain bagged a golden double yesterday after winning both the teams’ and individual titles in the 10-metre air rifle competitions in shooting at the eighth Arab Women Sports Tournament, currently taking place in Sharjah, the UAE.
The kingdom’s trio of Safa Mohamed Aldoseri, Noof Khalil Aldoseri, and Marwa Hamid Alamairi captured the gold medals in the teams’ event, while Safa added another gold after also taking first place in the individual contest.
The Bahraini shooters represented Riffa Club in their sport, which was held at Al Dhaid Cultural and Sports Club Shooting Range.
Their two gold medals yesterday brought the Bahrain delegation’s overall tally so far in Sharjah to six medals, including three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
The other gold medal was also claimed in shooting in the 10m air pistol teams’ event, where the nationals competed with the triumvirate of Qamar Ali, Mooza Abdulrahim Ali, and Badreya Ebrahim Alatawi. Qamar then also took bronze in the 10m air pistol individual competition.
The kingdom’s ace fencers, representing Busaiteen Club, earlier captured a silver medal in the teams’ epee competition, while Ritej Haithem Araoud won bronze in individual foil.
In yesterday’s 10m air rifle teams’ contest, Safa, Noof, and Marwa secured their crown after topping their event standings with a combined score of 1,852.1 points.
They finished ahead of silver-medallists Retaj Ahmed Al Zyady, Maryam Mohammed Arzouqi, and Fajr Saleh Al Dhubaib, who scored 1,847.3 points representing Kuwait Shooting Club, while Qatar’s Al Ramy Sports Club took the bronze medals through Almaha Mishal Al Ali, Dalal Mohammed Al Qebaisi, and Fatima Abdullah Al Abdulrahman, who posted 1,843.7 points.
Meanwhile, in the individual contest, Safa secured her title after delivering a composed performance in the final, posting a score of 247.9 points.
Safa edged Kuwait’s Arzouqi by a two-point margin, with Arzouqi securing silver on 245.9 points. Emirati shooter Fatima Obaid Al Suwaidi completed the podium finishers in third with a total of 223.7 points.
With yesterday’s results, Bahrain’s Riffa also won the overall champions’ trophy at the conclusion of the shooting programme at the eighth Arab Women Sports Tournament.
They achieved the highest score during the two days of action in air rifle and air pistol.
Riffa’s shooters are scheduled to return to the kingdom today following their participation in Sharjah.
Meanwhile, also yesterday, Bahrain’s Al Hala Club suffered a heavy 52-81 defeat against Shabab Fuheis Club from Jordan in basketball.
Hala were scoreless for the game’s first five minutes and were held to single digits in the opening period, trailing 6-19.
They never recovered as the Jordanians powered ahead by as many as 34 points in the second half.
Bayan Salman finished as the Bahrainis’ leading scorer with 20 points, which included four three-pointers, while Mariam Samir Owais chipped in with 15.
Zeina Alkarain led Fuheis with 18 points while Alexis Morris added 15 in their win.
Hala suffered their fourth defeat in as many outings and they continue to battle for their first victory.
They are scheduled to return to the hardwood against Al Fatat Sports Club from Kuwait today at 1pm for their penultimate assignment.
They then complete their schedule against Sharjah Women’s Sports Club from the UAE on Wednesday, also at 1pm. Both times are Bahrain.
Aside from shooting, fencing, and basketball, Bahrain also competed in Sharjah in archery with Riffa and will be going for gold taekwondo with Budaiya Club tomorrow.
The Bahrainis are amongst 63 clubs representing 16 countries across nine sports in this year’s Arab Women Sports Tournament, which is organised by Sharjah Women’s Sports under the patronage of wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and Sharjah Family and Community Council chairperson Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
