Plans are underway to transform the coastline of Dair and Samaheej into a vibrant recreational waterfront featuring beaches, sports facilities and leisure spaces, it has been revealed.
Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak outlined the government’s vision in a reply to a parliamentary question submitted by Dr Hisham Al Asheeri regarding the development of the waterfront in Muharraq Governorate’s Sixth Constituency, which includes the villages of Dair and Samaheej.
The minister said the project forms part of broader government efforts to enhance public beaches and waterfronts across the kingdom.
“The ministry pays great attention to public services and facilities in the kingdom as part of its commitment to providing the best services to citizens and residents and enhancing Bahrain’s civilised appearance,” Mr Al Mubarak said.
He explained that the government has adopted a phased approach to developing the East Muharraq waterfront.
The first phase has already been implemented through the Sama Beach project, located along Dry Dock Highway leading to Amwaj Islands.
“The Sama Beach project extends for approximately two kilometres and includes two beaches, retail outlets, a food truck area, a promenade, two padel courts and a football field,” he said.
“The project aims to provide an integrated recreational environment that supports tourism, sports and family leisure activities.”
The second phase will focus specifically on developing coastal land serving residents of Dair and Samaheej. The ministry plans to transform two government-owned coastal plots on Road 65 into a modern public beach and recreational waterfront in partnership with the private sector.
The proposed development will feature a range of recreational and community facilities including a seaside promenade, cycling tracks, seating and relaxation areas, green landscaped spaces, children’s play areas, outdoor fitness equipment and a service building.
“The aim is to create an integrated coastal destination that offers marine, sports and recreational activities suitable for all age groups,” Mr Al Mubarak said.
The ministry intends to deliver the project through investment partnerships with private developers.
“The project is expected to be presented on the government land investment platform during the first half of this year,” Mr Al Mubarak added.
“The ministry continues to develop waterfronts and public beaches within its properties, considering them as open spaces where residents can spend leisure time with their families. These areas encourage healthy lifestyles and the practice of various sports while supporting tourism and sustainable development.”
