The United Nations Security Council has adopted an Arab-Gulf draft resolution presented by Bahrain and supported by 135 countries condemning Iranian attacks on Bahrain, the Gulf states and Jordan.
The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favour, while Russia and China abstained, and no country voted against it.
The Security Council condemned Iran’s attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure in the Gulf and Jordan, and the casualties and damage they caused, describing them as a violation of international law and a threat to international peace. The council called for the ‘immediate cessation’ of Iranian attacks against countries in the region.
The resolution also condemned ‘any action or threat’ by Iran aimed at closing, obstructing or interfering in any way with international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the adoption of the draft resolution, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN Jamal Fares Al Rowaie said that international support to halt the attacks reflects a collective recognition of the seriousness of the Iranian aggression faced by Gulf countries.
He added that the region has witnessed in recent days a series of dangerous attacks targeting civilian facilities in a number of countries.
The Bahraini envoy affirmed that the Security Council’s decision demonstrated a clear stance rejecting attacks targeting states of the region, stressing that the Gulf region represents a fundamental pillar of global economic stability.
