Controversial American livestreamer Johnny Somali has been jailed in South Korea for six months after causing national outrage for kissing a statue representing World War 2 victims of sexual slavery.
Seoul authorities charged the 25-year-old with public nuisance in November 2024 after he posted a clip of himself kissing and dancing inappropriately on the statue. He has been barred from leaving the country since the investigation began.
A South Korean court convicted Khalid of multiple charges on Wednesday, including public nuisance and the distribution of sexual deepfakes.
Johnny Somali, whose real name is Ismael Ramsey Khalid, is notorious for provocative content that has led to his ban from several major streaming platforms. Following his sentence, Khalid will be prohibited from working with organisations that serve minors or people with disabilities.
