CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious’ Afonso Eulalio broke into the top 10 yesterday in the fourth stage of the 109th Giro d’Italia.
The elite men’s road race is part of the Union Cycliste Internationale World Tour 2026, and it is the first of three grand tours this season. The others are the Tour de France in July and the Vuelta a Espana in August and September.
Eulalio ranked an impressive sixth in yesterday’s 138-kilometre leg, completing the distance as part of the lead group in a sprint to the finish. The Portuguese rider was not far behind stage winner Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who triumphed in three hours eight minutes and 46 seconds.
Eulalio was one of two Bahrain Victorious members who secured places in the top 20 yesterday. Italian teammate Damiano Caruso took 15th, also as part of the bunch sprint.
Belgian Alec Segaert was 52nd in the stage, Italian Edoardo Zambanini came 58th, Croatian Fran Miholjevic was 80th, Australian Robert Stannard finished 82nd, and Dutch rider Mathijs Paasschens ranked 89th.
Following yesterday’s results, Caruso climbed seven spots to 13th on the race’s general classification, where Eulalio jumped 23 places to 31st.
Eulalio also rose 11 positions to barge into the top 10 of the best young rider ranking, which also featured Segaert in 13th and Zambanini in 17th after stage four.
This year’s Giro d’Italia will be covering a total of 3,470 kilometres and 47,539 metres of elevation. It will continue until May 31. Today will see the fifth stage, covering 203km.
