BAHRAIN have named a star-studded 18-member national athletics team that will be amongst the favourites to come away with medals on the track and in the field at the fourth GCC Games in Doha, Qatar.
Athletics events will be held across four days from tomorrow to Sunday and the kingdom’s squad features 10 women and eight men – headlined by ex-world indoor champion and defending Asian Games champion Kemi Adekoya and former under-20 world and Asian Games champion Edidiong Odiong.
Adekoya is slated to compete in three events, including the women’s 400 metres hurdles and the 400m, and will be a part of the 4x400m mixed relay. Odiong will be running in the 4x100m relays.
The rest of Bahrain’s women’s roster features Aisha Abdulla, Layla Kamal, Noora Jasim, Nelly Jepkosgei, Raihanah Garoubah, Zenab Moussa Mahamat, Zenab Ali and Sufian Hasmau.
Amongst the men, veterans Dawit Fikadu and Abdelrahman Mahmoud are the kingdom’s lead competitors, while the rest of the squad is composed of Ahmed Sabri, Abdikani Abdulhamid, Zouhair Aouad, Ali Haji, Salem Salem and Abdisamad Hirsi.
The Bahraini athletes will be contesting the sprints, middle and long-distance races, jumps, and throws at Doha’s Qatar Sports Club.
A number of members of Bahrain’s athletics team have already arrived in the Qatari capital alongside administration members and have kicked off their final preparations for tomorrow’s start of action.
