Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif Al Zayani has affirmed that the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a collective responsibility that cannot be overlooked.
In a speech at the United Nations, Dr Al Zayani stressed that ‘peace in the region requires addressing the issues of Iran’s nuclear programme, its missile capabilities, and its support for armed militias, in a way that gives the peoples of the region the opportunity for peace, development and peaceful coexistence’.
The minister was talking at the high-level open debate of the Security Council on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the United Nations Charter and Strengthening the UN-based International Order”.
Mr Al Zayani also said that Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, remains committed to strengthening multilateral co-operation.
Mr Al Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s steadfast commitment to the principles upon which the United Nations was founded eighty years ago, including mainly respect for countries’ sovereignty, non-interference in their internal affairs, refraining from threatening or using force, and resolving disputes through peaceful means.
He called on the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities in accordance with its Charter in a way that promotes confidence in the multilateral system.
The Foreign Minister said that this debate is taking place at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges, where humanitarian crises and armed conflicts intersect with rising terrorism and extremism, in addition to climate, health, and cyber challenges.
In light of these issues, he said, the multilateral system is undergoing a critical test, and the Security Council bears the responsibility of reinforcing collective responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, achieving sustainable development, and respecting human rights.
Dr Al Zayani underlined the need for the international community to defend the rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and sovereign state in accordance with the two-state solution, while expediting the granting of full UN membership to Palestine.
He added that Bahrain supports the outcomes of the first Peace Council meeting, chaired by US President Donald Trump, aimed at ending the war in Gaza and initiating reconstruction efforts.
The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Bahrain’s position calling on Iran to comply with its international obligations in accordance with international law and the principles of good neighbourliness.
The minister expressed appreciation for the effectiveness of the valiant armed forces of Bahrain and brotherly countries in confronting the Iranian attacks, while affirming the legitimate rights of the affected countries to fair compensation.
Dr Al Zayani also welcomed the tangible progress of negotiations between the US and Iran, commending Pakistan’s efforts in this regard to reach a memorandum of understanding establishing lasting peace in the region.
