A major push to accelerate long-awaited service and investment projects in one of Bahrain’s largest housing developments has been launched after the Southern Municipal Council unanimously approved a proposal to inventory and officially register designated plots in Hunainiya.
The proposal, submitted by legal, financial and administrative committee chairman and area councillor Khalid Shajira, seeks to organise the ownership status of allocated lands in Block 901 by registering them in the names of the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry and the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry.

Mr Shajira
The move is expected to clear the way for a range of public service, recreational and investment projects aimed at meeting the growing needs of residents in Hunainiya – a rapidly expanding neighbourhood.
The recommendation has now been referred to Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak for review in co-ordination with Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Nawaf Al Maawda.
“There are several pending services that need the go-ahead within this massive housing area, which was built around two decades ago,” said Mr Shajira.
“Residents have waited patiently for facilities that would improve their quality of life. Organising the legal status of these lands is a necessary step to ensure projects can move forward without delays and in accordance with the approved regulations.”
According to the proposal, some of the plots could be utilised for community facilities, parks and recreational amenities, while others may be invested through commercial activities that generate sustainable revenue.
Among the investment options highlighted are leasing sites for telecommunications towers, commercial outlets and other business activities that could contribute financially to the maintenance and development of local services.
Mr Shajira said the objective was not only to address existing service requirements, but also to create long-term opportunities that would benefit residents and strengthen municipal resources.
“We want every available piece of land to be used effectively and responsibly,” he added.
“Through proper planning, these sites can provide both essential services and economic value, creating a balanced development model that serves the community today and supports future growth.”
Southern Municipal Council chairman Abdulla Abdullatif welcomed the unanimous approval, describing it as an important administrative step towards unlocking the full potential of the Hunainiya housing project.
“This recommendation reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring that public assets are properly organised and utilised for the benefit of citizens,” he said.
“Hunainiya has witnessed significant residential growth over the years and it is vital that supporting infrastructure, community facilities and investment opportunities keep pace with that expansion.”

Mr Abdullatif
Mr Abdullatif said co-ordination between the relevant ministries would be crucial in translating the proposal into practical projects on the ground.
“The council is keen to see these lands transformed into productive spaces that provide services, create opportunities and enhance the overall living environment for residents,” he added.
The recommendation follows a detailed review by the council’s legal, financial and administrative committee, which concluded that registering the allocated plots would provide a clear legal framework for future development and ensure their optimal use.
Residents are hopeful that the move will finally pave the way for new facilities and projects in Al Hunainiya, turning long-designated plots into active community assets after years of waiting.
